Our Club Captain's Newsletter 17 March

Newsletter from Ian Moore, our Club Captain

It has been a pleasing start to the 2023 bridge year with all sessions showing an increase in numbers from last year. Currently we have 3 events running including the Junior, Intermediate and Open individual championships. The Junior event is on Wednesday evenings with the Open and Intermediate, starting on Monday evenings. I would encourage members to arrange partners and play in these events.

TOURNAMENTS

Cambridge Club’s Junior and Novice tournament is on Saturday 15 April.

Club Captain's Christmas Newsletter

Club Captain’s Christmas Newsletter

The 2022 bridge year has come to an end and it was particularly pleasing to see the playing numbers gradually increase after several setbacks due to Covid.

A special thanks to our retiring president, Allison Vince, who has helped us navigate through these challenging times and welcome to Paul Phillips our new President.

Opening night of 2023 is Wednesday 11th January, a draw for partners evening, where all members are encouraged to attend.

Great results from NZ Wide Pairs

Fantastic success for Josie and Don at the NZ wide pairs held on Friday 11 November.   With the adjusted total of 67.67 they were 7th overall and top Intd/Intd pair.  A great result for them

Kate and Gwyn also did really well coming 20th overall and the 8th Open/Open pair with 65.89.

All who played enjoyed their night and the pizza and ice cream slices organised by Michael (who sadly couldn't attend having finally fallen prey to Covid)

Happy Birthday Pam

Pam L On Thursday 3 November we enjoyed sharing Birthday cake with Pam for her 81st Birthday.  Unfortunately we had missed her 80th last year but so pleased we could share this one with her.

Intermediate tournament

The Cambridge Intermediate tournament held last Sunday was a great success.

Thank you to all the members who contributed their time, energy and food.

Cambridge players did very well with Leonie and Irenee finishing 2nd, Ayako and Margaret Fitzgerald third.

Barb Wilson and Diane Brown won the best Junior pair and finished 7th overall.

Congratulations to you all. Well done.

Upcoming Events

The Great Boat Race - Session 1 in 2022

Wednesday players at both Cambridge and Tauranga played the same hands on 19-Oct - as they will on 26-Oct and 2-Nov. This is not abnormal - it happens with every session of bridge at about one third of clubs in NZ. It is part of a scheme called X-Clubs which scores across the results of many clubs. The reason for this arrangement is to slot everyone's results into a wider spectrum so the percentages are more meaningful. It takes about 120 pairs for the results to settle down to +/-0.5% of what they would be in a huge field.
