Clare and Anna’s Congress pairs story

Last year, Anna and I played the NZ Open Restricted pairs together and finished 2nd. Photo was taken by Di and Jane on the way out of the venue. It was in the car on the way home that Anna casually checked the results that she had been entering playing South.  Oh dear! A scoring correction was needed and it wasn’t a good one. So we rang the venue and alerted the scorer to it and the change meant we came third. C’est La vie.

Last weekend, we played the same event together.  We played steadily throughout and were sitting pretty towards the top going in to the final round.  The boards were the most challenging of the competition and we knew we had overbid on some.  Results came out and we were a close third. Pretty happy. We buy drinks and start reviewing the boards and then the results. we looked at board 8 and realised that the score was wrong, but in a good way for us! So we reported the scoring error and we knew it would make a difference as it was 3% for us currently as it was scored our way and not the other direction. According to the double dummy’s makeable contract, we should now have a big score but the board obviously challenged many as it only became a 35% board for us, but it was just enough to switch 2nd and 3rd places so we finished second.

The irony is that the pair we switched with both years was the same pair!
