Hamilton players shine at Cambridge Junior and Novice Champs

Clare Sat, 29/03/2025 - 17:09

It was wonderful to see 12 tables full of enthusiastic novice and junior players today, especially given the challenges of navigating the NZ bridge website to enter the tournament this last week.  A special welcome was made to a founding member of our club, Laura Somerville.

The day was a friendly and successful event thanks to Pam’s directing and Ian Moore helping in a multitude of ways.

The event was sponsored by Resonate and Nellie came to present the prizes.

All three top pairs were from Hamilton bridge club! Congratulations to the following winners:

1st Stewart Lawrence and Mark Beavan

2nd Sean Dwyer and Kevin Lawrence

3rd Iain Paterson and Larissa Eyre (Larissa learnt to play bridge in Cambridge.)

Top novices were Sandra Wilson and Bridget Bird from Matamata. We were greateful to all the novices taking part for the whole day when we cancelled the afternoon novice session due to lack of interest.

Cambridge players did not come home empty handed though with Peter C and Alison J winning NS session prize and Paul C and Anne T finding form for the EW session prize in the afternoon. Well done to them!

Kudos and thanks to Steve who took over the scoring with the support of Michael when our scorer became ill.

Thank you to Bernice, Pam L, Alison J and Peter C for stepping in one session each to avoid the need for a phantom.

We are also indebted to all those who provided yummy food, which maintained the club’s great reputation or helped in the kitchen or afterwards tidying up.
