13th year of Cambridge 6s proved very lucky indeed!
What a great day we had at Don Rowlands this year! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to make it the success it was. You are all stunning the way you quietly get on making the day look effortless and professional.
While I cannot name everyone who helped and the list is too long thanks to all you wonderful members, kudos awards to:
- Kim who never got thanked on the day for presenting and helping with all the paperwork
- Allison who marshals us all into action and ensures everything is in place
- Mary who arranges all the catering. No mean feat!
- Bill for organising the distribution of boards and setup
- Pam who designed the quiz and printed it out naming each sheet for teams
- Anne and Josie who organised the raffle
- Raelene and Sue Webb for welcoming players
It was Jan’s swan song as the Sixes scorer so that leaves us in a quandary for next year. Jan has been instrumental in us being able to ever develop the sixes in the first place and we will sorely miss his expertise and reliability.
While we said farewell to Jan, we welcomed our two new local tournament directors Nick Saunders and Nick Cantlon who were terrific and ensured our day ran smoothly from a playing perspective. As usual everyone pitched up to have fun. I do think the dressing up adds to the vibe this event brings as the preparation to get dressed up as a team provides an element of anticipation and brings people together. I will be interested to find out the results of the dress-up poll we carried out whether we are dressing up as nursery rhymes or not in 2027!
We had delicious treats to eat throughout, boards promptly distributed in the right order, help was always at hand for a different board to play, the quiz sheets just appeared at our tables with no time wasted and there appeared to be no dramas at the bridge table.
And huge congratulations to:
Paul Carpenter and Neville Strickland who won the junior section
Sue Keating and Steve Hunt who finished 3rd in the intermediate section
Herman and Yuzhong who won Open section
The Witching Hour team who came second overall - a huge achievement for Cambridge. Well done to Pam and Ian Moore, Anne Blewden and Josie van Weerd, Neville and Paul.
The Luck of the Irish who came third overall with Cambridge members Mike Neels and Michele Liddle respectively playing with Ella Gray and Deslee Howell. Mike and Ella were at table 1 for much of the day.
And last but not least - to Herman whose team won the event!
A huge final thank you to AFT pharmaceuticals for sponsoring the event. Irenee has been instrumental in securing its support so thanks to Irenee as well. Sponsorship makes a big difference to the financial success of the day, which has made a nice profit for the club to enjoy later in the year.
Photos will be posted in our website gallery when available. We are very lucky to have Bruce and Dawn Hancock come each year - willingly donating their time and expertise - to do this.
Finally, speaking of lucky, it was a dry day and no rain in sight!
