Club Captain's Newsletter - January 2023

We have started a new bridge year and it is pleasing to see an increase in the table numbers. There are still many members not playing and you can always find a partner by contacting the partnership steward if you wish to play.

Our partnership stewards this year are:

Monday morning – Paul Phillips 021475921

Monday evening - Sue Aitken 0272735243

Wednesday evening – Kay Hanna 021523954

Wednesday evening provides a host, so you will always get to play even if you turn up without a partner.

Thursday afternoon - Bev Douglas 021751825 (currently Ian Moore 0274706070 as Bev is unavailable for a while)

National Grading

Congratulations to Barb Wilson who has changed from Junior to Intermediate with NZ Bridge’s annual announcement of the latest grades.  Barb is the only change in our club gradings for this year

Friday Morning

Friday morning learning session on 3rd February at 9.00am. Players attending are encouraged to bring details of a hand (or hands) they had trouble bidding, playing or defending during the week and these can be discussed during the session. Thanks to the experienced club members who have offered to run these sessions on a roster system.

Cambridge Junior/Novice Tournament

All our Juniors and Novices are encouraged to enter this event which will be held on Saturday 14th April at our clubrooms. We have many strong Junior players in our club who have not played tournaments before so this is a good starting point as all players are the same grade.

Clipboards

There are clipboards on  the front desk of the clubrooms asking for card turners for Melanie on Monday and Thursday plus another clipboard requesting hosts for Wednesday evening.

Lessons

Clare Coles, Kate McFadyen and Pam Moore will be running a series of lessons during the next two months for Novice, Junior and Intermediate players. Check your programme booklet for dates and topics for these lessons. Please make an effort to attend these lessons as they will improve your bridge.

There has been a request from some Acol players to learn the basics of 5 Card Major/Strong NT system to enable them to widen their partnership group or at least understand the system when defending. Pam has agreed to run a session on this system so contact her if you are interested. Time and date will be arranged to suit the players.

Enjoy your bridge and remember to contact me or partnership stewards if you need help finding a partner to play at the club. We want to see you all back in 2023.
