Our Club Captain's Newsletter 17 March

Newsletter from Ian Moore, our Club Captain

It has been a pleasing start to the 2023 bridge year with all sessions showing an increase in numbers from last year. Currently we have 3 events running including the Junior, Intermediate and Open individual championships. The Junior event is on Wednesday evenings with the Open and Intermediate, starting on Monday evenings. I would encourage members to arrange partners and play in these events.

TOURNAMENTS

Cambridge Club’s Junior and Novice tournament is on Saturday 15 April.

All our junior and novice players are encouraged to find partners and play in this event. Please see the Club Captain, Ian Moore, if you are unable to find a partner. Entries can be made on the New Zealand Bridge tournament page or on a clipboard at our club rooms.

Matamata Open 8B is on 25th March and there are prizes for all grades.

The first day of the WAPS (Waikato Area Pairs) is in Morrinsville on 26th March which is a tournament suitable for all grades, just turn up no pre-registration needed.

Cambridge Sixes on 5 August is also an event that is coming up in August. Now is the time to make up a team of two Open players, two Intermediate players and two Junior players enter this wonderful event.

Past Tournaments

Players from our club have enjoyed success at tournaments in the Waikato Bays region. Congratulations to Liz Clayton, and Vicki Jacobsen were second in the Hamilton Intermediate Tournament, Barb Wilson Nandi Costa were sixth and Paul Phillips and Diane Brown fifth in the Hamilton Junior Tournament.

CYCLONE GABRIELLE DONATION

OUR CLUB recently donated $500 to the NZ Bridge Foundation who will distribute funds to the clubs affected by the recent cyclone. Many Hawkes Bay clubs were affected and have appreciated help from fellow bridge players and clubs to enable them to return to normal play. Thanks to those members who donated extra funds and to Kevin Whyte for initiating our club’s response.

IMPROVER LESSONS

Clare Coles, Kate McFadyen and Pam Moore have been running a series of lessons for junior and intermediate players, Thanks to those members for their time and effort to give our players these opportunities to improve their game.

BEGINNER LESSONS

Start on June 7 so now is a good time to start encouraging people to join the lessons.

And to finish a quote to improve your game.

“The player who takes a time to work out the enemies holdings will always enjoy an advantage over the mechanical player, who sees only the cards in front of their nose. Counting the cards may seem a laborious chore to begin with, but it quickly becomes second nature, and brings real rewards when it turns a guess into a certainty. Problems in play and defence tend to melt away like snow on a summer’s day when you make the effort to count. Quite simply counting, makes the difference between winning and losing.” Hugh Kelsey'
